Insert Pithy Title Combining Pitchfork and Thailand HERE…

A couple of things…

First, today is my birthday… and my present to myself is the Pitchfork Music Festival which happens this weekend.  Gus is coming down from Minneapolis.  We’re manly men, staying at a bed and breakfast.  That’s right.  If you don’t start something, there won’t be something.  Expect a report on this next week.

Second, notice that I didn’t mention awesome wife Liz in that first part.  Why?  Because she’s the luckiest wife EVAR.  She left for Thailand today.  She’ll be gone for a few weeks at some “training”…  but we all know that she’s really going there to have fun.

In other news…  commuting by bike in 90 degree weather, not as cool (no pun intended) as I thought it would be.  My friends…  baby wipes, what every adult man wants to rub all over his body when he gets to work in the morning.  Haven’t you heard?  It’s the new black.

In other, other news…  I think I pulled or strained a muscle in my arm.  Does anyone have any recommendations for what I can do for it?  Should I go to a doctor and get something?  Or should I pamper myself and get a massage (will that even help it)?

In even more news…  Work is trying to crush my soul.  Who knew having your soul crushed paid so well?

Finally, I have come to a decision.  I need to sell all the collectible crap that is clogging up my house and never sees the light of day.  I figure I can turn a few grand.   Who couldn’t use a few grand?  I know I could;  especially when we go visit my dad in Brazil.  Have you seen those plane tickets.  Outrageous!

Cleaned and Ready

and I decided recently that we would rent out one of our extra rooms to a grad student. She put an ad out on craigslist for a roommate and lo and behold the requests to see the room started coming in.

Well, of course, that means that we have to… you know… clean it up for visitors. So I’ve spent tonight cleaning the room out and making it look a bit more purdy. Our first potential roommate is coming around 10 tomorrow morning.

Excited, nervous and a little sad all at the same time…

It’s the Delegates, Stupid…

Weird thing about primary voting here in Illinois.  You actually vote for your delegates here.  I don’t recall ever doing this in Florida, and it caught me by surprise this morning.  You even vote for an alternate… just in case your original choice flakes out.

Very odd…

Also, what’s the point of voting in a primary that only has one candidate?  I’m looking at you Dick Durbin for Senate.

No Smoking?

The other day someone asked me what I thought about laws that ban smoking in bars and restaurants.  My response is that it’s a health issue.  If we can regulate the quality of food in public houses (the long name for pubs), we can regulate the quality of air too.  Others seem to think that smoking is a “right” of some sort and that any public place should be able to decide whether to allow smoking or not.

Most laws take it as a work safety issue.  Workers should be able to work in a clean environment, including air.  This reminds me about when I first started working in an office environment in the late 80’s.  I worked at a bank operations center, and smoking was allowed in the building.  When you walked into the cavernous items processing department, there was a perpetual smoke cloud hanging in the air.  About half the staff smoked, including the manager.

A couple of years later laws were passed that banned smoking in most workplaces in Florida.  This, of course, included the office I worked in.  And thus, the “smoke break” was born.  Today, after nearly 20 years of no smoking in most workplaces in Florida, we’ve grown so accustomed to it that it seems out of place to see anyone smoking in any office or workplace setting.

The only workplaces that were exempt from these laws were bars and restaurants.  Since then, however, restaurants have been added to the list of places where smoking is banned.  The question I have for folks that believe in the “right” to smoke in pubs is if all smoking ban laws should be removed from the books.  How would you like to work in a place that allowed smoking?  Why do you think bars and restaurants are different than say department stores or your local grocer or your workplace?

A Weekend of DDM

Spent the weekend playing D&D Minis in two different towns named Bloomington. Saturday I played in Desert of Desolation Pre-Release tournament in Bloomington, IN. Today, I played another pre-release tournament in Bloomington, IL. And then I played some straight up D&D. Now… that’s a good weekend while the wife is off in Florida. 🙂

In other news… I found this very good Madonna vs. Bronski Beat mashup. Enjoy. 🙂
